Dr Alan Bleakley, Emeritus Professor of Medical Education and Medical Humanities at the University of Plymouth Peninsula Medical School, is an Artel Press author The Bio-illogical (2023) and will be the keynote speaker at the forthcoming Hippocrates Symposium at the University of Oviedo, Spain 23-24 May 2024.
Alan’s talk is entitled: ‘Poetry as antibody: Inoculating against the malaise of instrumentalism in medical education’.
He will also be giving a poetry reading with Dr Shane Neilson (family practitioner, critic, and poet) of McMaster University, Canada.
Alan and Shane will in addition be launching their co-edited book The Routledge Handbook of Medicine and Poetry with over 30 contributors embracing conversations between medicine, medical education, and poetry.
